Wood - The
construction of our fly boxes starts with handpicked native Vermont
lumber chosen for its color and grain structure. We aim to use
parts of the tree that are as figured as possible. After the lumber
is rough cut, it is vacuum kiln-dried to 6% moisture for greatest
stability, planed and cut to size where the routing and finishing
process begins. The blanks are made on a state-of-the-art Italian
CNC routing machine for the best precision, accuracy and uniformity.
From there, the fly boxes are assembled, finish sanded, oiled and
finally laser engraved.
It is our mission to use woods that are
native to Vermont such as Sugar Maple, Cherry, Birch, Ash and Birdseye
Maple. Birdseye is a rare and unique wood that is found only in
the eastern U.S.
Only 1% of Sugar Maple cut is Birdseye and only
a fraction of that is usable for our purposes. The cause of the
natural phenomenon that creates its unique grain structure is not
fully known, but it makes beautiful fly boxes.
Hinges - After
searching for the right hinge system for a long time, I believe
we've found the best one for our fly boxes in a solid brass barrel
or cylinder hinge. These unique self-hiding hinges are rust resistant
and are completely hidden when the fly boxes are closed, allowing
the natural beauty of the wood to be seen without an ugly hinge
band being visible. They are high tech, expensive and simply the
best.
Magnetic closure - Our fly boxes are held in the
closed position by magnetic force created by two Rare Earth Neodymium
discs that are relieved into each half of the fly boxes. These
discs are very small, yet strong enough to generate just the right
amount of holding force. They have a good-looking metallic appearance
and are without a doubt the best, if not the cheapest, magnet for
the job.
Foam Inserts - A New England company
manufactures and cuts the foam inserts specially for
our fly boxes. They are made from the highest-grade
closed cell foam available, and heat-molded into ¼" ripple
foam sheets for the right half of the fly boxes and flat sheets
for the left. They will last for years but are
replaceable should the need arise.
Laser Engraving - Our logo bears the distinctive
Mayfly & Maple
Leaf, which represents our company's mission: the marriage of the
beauty of fly fishing and the quality of Vermont.
Our Vermont Fly
Box Company fly boxes are laser engraved with our small, attractive
logo on the back cover. The size, location and design were chosen
so as not to detract from the natural beauty of the wood, but to
enhance the overall appearance. This process is done with the highest
quality laser engraving system available which happens to be in
another small shop right here in Vermont.
